Windows Vista introduced it's new version of
Outlook - Windows Mail. Although most features are similar to Outlook
Express it is slightly smoother graphic wise and seems to be more
stable.
In previous versions we had .dbx files for each folder
created under Outlook Express. Windows mail got away from this and
locates each email in a separate file itself. Files are also located
in different locations. All your email files are stored in:
C:\Users\USER NAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local Folders
Here you will find your standard folders such as Inbox,
Outbox, Sent Items, Deleted Items and any other folders you might
have created. Emails themselves are stored inside each folder as
a separate file with .eml extension.
Junk E-Mail folder is also installed by default. It
seems to update itself whenever you update your windows.
So far I've noticed one thing, Vista seems to get
lazy and not take care of it's clean up. Files in the deleted folder
seem to be left behind and are not deleted, even after emptying
deleted items folder. You have to manually go inside the Deleted
Folders folder and remove the files yourself, seems to be an awful
waste of space.
